Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
